I'm a simple emigrant and I know how to read German media
Basically, in Germany every publication has its own political leaning. Some lean more to the left, others to the right, but overall journalism here is fairly independent. The German Press Council monitors it. It created the Media Code (Pressekodex) with journalistic and ethical standards. It also monitors the media itself and issues warnings to those who blatantly spout nonsense or violate journalistic standards. However, this code of conduct by itself is not a law, because otherwise it would limit freedom of speech, which is considered one of the most important values in Germany. Therefore the media cannot be punished for violations, not even fined. It’s more a matter of honor, and every German journalist seems to swear to follow this code, it seems. And beyond that, everything rests on reputation. In the comments I’ll post a picture with reprimands to publications for 2023. Spoiler: BILD here is considered yellow press, but sometimes they get exclusives before anyone else. Of course, if you post everything indiscriminately without checking, something is bound to blow up! In major media there isn’t blatant lying, but the way information is presented always goes through the prism of editorial policy. In the image attached to the post you can see the placement of different sources by political leaning and quality. My advice, to avoid one-sided propaganda, is to read Spiegel and FAZ. This will give a fairly balanced view of what’s happening. In any case, in Germany there is a choice of what to read and information is open and accessible; the main thing is to develop your critical thinking. And if you want some chaos — the comments on social media aren’t off limits! #useful
