I'm a simple emigrant and I sometimes rejoice that I don't live in Berlin

Last weekend in the capital of Germany there was a demonstration for the right of women to walk topless. Naturally, this news made the rounds in all the media, and when it reached me, my eyes rolled back so far that I saw all four of my neurons. It all began with a woman who was sunbathing topless in a park with her own friend and her son being asked to dress. She didn’t like it, because her friend was topless too, and the police singled her out. Strictly speaking, she hadn’t broken any law, but there was nothing to appeal to: there simply aren’t any rules regulating this. Berlin, in general, has a reputation for being a super liberal city; it differs greatly from the rest of Germany. I sometimes even get the sense that people there no longer know what other rights to advocate for—now a half-naked cycling marathon. The media don’t report how many people were there, but from photos and videos, I think no fewer than 200 people. Women rode under the slogans “my body—my choice” and “stop sexism.” Funny enough, among the demonstrators were also guys with inflatable chests. But I think they came more to laugh than to sincerely support the “poor” women in their fight for their rights. Honestly, I don’t understand this at all. We’ve already solved all the problems in the world; one remains—the ability to stroll around the city topless. I think the porn industry will also be against it. And what about you, what do you think about it? photo: CHRISTOPHE GATEAU/DPA
