I'm a simple emigrant, and in Germany they also celebrate May Day

Today in Germany there's another holiday, but Germans started celebrating it yesterday already. On the night from April 30 to May 1, the Walpurgis Night (Walpurgisnacht) occurs here. This is such an ancient German tradition, something like Halloween in spring. According to legend, on this night witches gather on the Brocken mountain, hold a sabbath, brew potions and pelmeni, and dance with the devil – basically rejoice until the Inquisition comes for their heads. Ordinary mortals also hold their own sabbath: they jump over bonfires, dance in clubs or simply on the streets, and sometimes even dress up and go to the Castle for a party. Unlike witches they also drink beer and eat sausages. You wake up after such a night, and there is a birch tree with ribbons placed under the windows. Don't rush to call an ambulance; this is another May Day tradition. Maibaum is a tree with ribbons tied to it, as in the photo. Especially romantic guys install the May tree right under the windows of their beloved. This tradition goes back as far as 1224, and somewhere from the 17th century it became part of village matchmaking. Now it’s more often just a sign of affection, even if the beloved is already your wife and you have seven children. I think the guys who did this were very brave. After all, if the girl reciprocated, she would cook dinner. And if not, the tree would stay there forever. Consider it a monument to the friend zone. And then, finally, Labour Day itself. Trade union rallies, marches of the concerned, but about that I already wrote. #holidays
