Post: Today in Germany is Children's Day

I'm a simple emigrant, and today in Germany is Children's Day

In 1954, the United Nations General Assembly proposed that all countries introduce Children's Day to remind about children's rights and their problems. As a guideline, the UN named November 20, but stressed that each country could choose its own date. In Germany, two traditions emerged. In West Germany they decided to celebrate September 20 β€” a convenient day in the school year, and symbolically it differed from the summer holiday. In the GDR, on the contrary, they continued to celebrate June 1, together with other socialist countries, focusing on gifts, entertainment and mass events for children. After the unification of Germany, the question arose: which day to keep? In the end they chose September 20, because it was associated with the UN's international approach and emphasized more serious topics β€” the protection and rights of children, while the summer holiday was more about fun and treats. And it was also a political gesture: that we are oriented toward Western traditions and together with the international community. But the summer holiday did not disappear completely. Many families and organizations in East Germany still celebrate June 1. So the children end up winning: they have two occasions for attention and gifts. And that's the most important!
