I'm a simple emigrant, and today in Germany it's Children's Day

In 1954, the United Nations General Assembly proposed that all countries establish a Children's Day to remind the world of children's rights and the problems they face. As a guideline, the UN named November 20, but stressed that each country could choose its own date. Germany developed two traditions. In West Germany they decided to celebrate September 20 β€” a convenient day in the school year, and symbolically it differed from the summer holiday. In the GDR, on the contrary, they continued to celebrate June 1, together with other socialist countries, emphasizing gifts, entertainment, and mass events for children. After Germany's reunification, the question arose: which day to keep? In the end they chose September 20, because it was associated with the UN's international approach and emphasized more serious themes β€” protection and children's rights, whereas the summer celebration was more about fun and treats. And it was also a political gesture: that we align with Western traditions and together with the international community. But the summer celebration did not disappear completely. Many families and organizations in East Germany still celebrate June 1. So the children ultimately win: they have two occasions for attention and gifts. And that's the most important thing!
