Post: I cook Olivier

I'm a simple emigrant and I cook Olivier

Honestly, I was determined to write a post about Olivier salad in the summer, but, as you can see, fate had other plans. Apparently, even if you try, December without Olivier is impossible. I once watched an interview with Alexandra Arkhipova, where, among other things, she talked about the traditions of the new era. And she summed up this thought with, “Russians are those who eat Olivier.” For me, it's a somewhat controversial but definitely interesting generalization. I calculated how much it costs to make this salad in Germany. I will list the costs for potatoes, cucumbers, eggs, and mayonnaise in full, because I don't buy just one potato or 20 grams of mayonnaise. All prices are rounded for simplicity and current as of December 2025. Potatoes – €2 for 2.5 kg Sausage – €3.7 for 350 g Green peas – €1 for a 400 g can Salted cucumbers – €1.50 for 370 g Eggs – €2.80 for 10 pieces Carrots – €0.35 for two small carrots Mayonnaise – €2.50 for 250 g Greens – €1.20 per bunch, I usually take at least two kinds, so €2.40 So, to buy everything for Olivier you would spend €16.25. With that money you'll have a whole bowl of salad and leftovers of some ingredients. What do you think— is it expensive? In general, I make this salad quite often: for every event it's a must, plus from time to time, when the desire to eat it outweighs the laziness to cook. Are you already looking forward to eating it? How often do you usually cook it? #food #money
