I'm a simple emigrant and I don't have a car of my own
And even if there were, I would still not be able to sit behind the wheel, because regardless of the type of visa, with a Russian license I could use it only for the first six months. After that it must be replaced with local ones. Since traffic rules differ, you can't simply come and replace your document with a German one, but there are still some relaxations anyway. To obtain a driver's license, regardless of whether you have Russian ones, you will have to go through the standard package: theory study, practical training, and passing two exams. The only difference is that if you already hold a license, the number of required hours is smaller, which reduces your costs by almost half. In general, getting a license here is an expensive affair: if you pass both exams on the first try, it will cost up to 2500 euros in total. Prices, of course, depend on the state and on the driving schools themselves. To get admitted to the courses you only need one doctor—a ophthalmologist, unlike Russia. On the other hand, here you need to take first aid courses and obtain a certificate — in my opinion, a good requirement. The theory part is roughly the same as ours: parsing the rules, working through exam tickets, questions for an adequate analysis of a road situation. And the practical part is more interesting. Of the mandatory driving hours — four hours must be logged on the highways and another four at night. I wouldn’t be surprised if they made you drive a couple more hours after a bottle of beer! Both exams cost about 80 euros each, with the theory you can take up to five times, and the practical an unlimited number of times, though, before each new attempt, you have to log another 10 hours and pay again, naturally. And the exam itself lasts half an hour: the inspector also sits in the back seat and watches everything you do, and at the end asks a theoretical question, but about the car. If everything goes well, you walk out of the training car with your license, no extra trips to the traffic police and no queues. I haven't quite decided yet whether I need a license, but I’ve already decided that I don’t have an extra 1k euros, and would you like to obtain an international driving permit and roam around the world? #Ordnung #useful
