I'm a simple emigrant and I have good neighbors
Yesterday a neighbor brought my parcel, about which I hadn't even suspected. I was in the office, and the delivery person kindly left it in the hall on the first floor. And in general, in our building it's normal to accept neighbors' parcels. I do the same, since I work more from home. Relationships with neighbors in Germany are a whole other level of integration. Don't even hope that you can simply live your life and not take their opinions into account. Especially if you don't live in central Frankfurt, but somewhere in a small town. There is no culture of you moving into a new home and going around to neighbors with a pie. But rest assured, German grandmas and grandpas have already started sizing you up as a person. Most likely, they've already run over to see what you're throwing away and whether it's done correctly, checked with a tape measure how your bike sits in the basement, and tuned the most sensitive noise meter to your apartment. But in small towns and villages, neighbors constantly organize joint holidays, festivals, or other gatherings. True, that won't stop anyone there from writing a passive-aggressive note in neat handwriting on 18 pages front and back! In big cities too, they sometimes try to organize neighbor communities, but it turns out worse. It's understandable: here people speak German less often, and they're not always ready to get closer to their neighbors. Nevertheless, there is a social network for neighbors, firstly, it exists, and secondly, there’s always some activity there. People look for—for example—someone to walk with or go to the theatre, who will sit with their dog, discuss the news and give away or sell things. So far I've been lucky and have had only good relations with my neighbors. But maybe that's because I've lived among people roughly the same age. Although I'm not worried about a potential move to a German village. I know how to ingratiate myself with the local grandmas: I'll start by discussing the weather and how things used to be better, then I'll compliment their flowers in the garden, and in the worst case I'll go to bribe them with a pie, or with kebabs. And you, how do you interact with your neighbors? Share stories in the comments, and I'll translate the picture there. #Ordnung
