Post: I loved ice cream

I'm a simple emigrant and I loved ice cream

Recently I was in Prague, I liked it: great weather, beauty all around, crowds of tourists. And among these crowds I constantly heard German speech. I’m not surprised by it; on travels I always meet many Germans. In Lanzarote, it seems I actually used German more than English. And I’m glad to understand more people — that’s the positive side. But there’s also a negative: the better I understand a language, the more opportunities there are to cringe. You know, when you travel emigrating by bus, you hear someone speaking in their native language, and there’s always a story like “and she even gave birth to a guy from prison, as soon as the aliens brought her back, and now they’re suing for their raccoon.” And how am I supposed to catch that back in your language? Now such situations catch up with me in a third language. So, in the Czech Republic there is the traditional pastry trdelník — a tube rolled in sugar. Pretty sweet on its own, so I like it without fillings. But in one shopping center I saw a trdelník with ice cream and kept staring at it, but I didn’t buy. Leaving the mall, I hear a mother and son arguing in German, I turn around and see the scene: a son about 15 sits, eating that ice cream, all smeared; the mother stands in front of him and yells that he’s such a hopeless slob. Then she angrily snatches it from his hands, as if to say he can’t do it himself, and HOLDS IT FOR HER SON. And the son starts licking it right there, along with the wrapper and his mother’s fingers. And still the whole thing gets smeared, even his cap gets dirty. I just stand there, watching in silence, but my face with subtitles so loud that even my friends asked what happened to me. Well, to say that ice cream, or any other, I lost my appetite would be an understatement. I now have trauma and I don’t know how to forget this image and get rid of the urge to vomit every time I want ice cream. And I crave it often, especially in summer. So suffer with me now, or what, should I bear this cross alone? Even now I’m writing and I can’t. What’s the point of all this: please tell me this isn’t a new typical model of relationships in German families and that teenagers here are still more independent after all? I urgently need to restore faith in the sanity of the local youth and especially their parents! #curiosities #food #World_trips
