I'm a simple emigrant and the local cuisine never ceases to amaze me
Recently we were in a Bavarian village in a small Alpine guesthouse. All meals were included and, by feel, they fed us there to the gills. And, importantly, for some reason the heartiest meal was dinner: both soup and a main course with steak and dessert. And on the second day something strange happened. In front of me they placed a plate that had only broth, in which floated a sliced pancake, seasoned with fresh greens. I didn't believe my eyes at first, thought maybe this was a failed egg noodles and the cook simply got the proportions wrong. But no. It was Flädlesuppe (flädlesuppe) or "pancake soup": the pancake we know is cut into thin strips and thrown into hot broth. And this soup is also considered a "comfort food." I don't know, I didn't feel very comfortable when I first saw it. 😅 But I must say, in taste it turned out quite decent. Rich beef broth and most importantly WITHOUT ONION. In Swabia it's loved on holidays, and in Austria it's often served at weddings. The main thing is not to tell grandmothers; surely they will like the idea of using leftovers from old pancakes. By the way, for dessert that dinner they brought us Kaiserschmarrn; I'll post in the comments what it looks like, but you could say it's "pancake scraps." So I'm starting to suspect the cook there has his own optimization. And would you like to try a pancake soup? Or have you already tried it? #food #curiosities
