I'm a simple emigrant and it's time to move
When I first arrived in Germany, I found an apartment fairly quickly, in less than two weeks, so I didn’t get to experience all the nightmares of searching for housing. But even then I managed to enjoy interior photos! For example, in one listing there may be only two photos of a multi-family building from the outside, and that's all; in another – corners, walls, part of the floor, a random bit of the window. You show up to such a place and suddenly discover that the ceilings are only two meters high. And in some listings there are 50 photos of every detail, like the soap in the bathroom: you end up sitting there, trying to imagine what the apartment actually looks like. But the main problem is the very high demand. There aren’t that many options here for finding housing. The main platforms: immobilienscout24.de, immowelt.de, ebay-kleinanzeigen.de and Facebook Marketplace. Even despite such terrible photos, high prices (now it's hard to find a decent two-bedroom place for under €1,200 in non-central areas) and often older construction, in Frankfurt demand still outstrips supply by 50,000 apartments. By the way, apartments here are usually rented completely unfurnished, and that makes sense from a long-term rental perspective. But on the other hand, the “move in and live” concept basically doesn’t work. I'm looking for at least a bathroom that's equipped and a built-in kitchen—that's already a luxury. For now there are almost no options, but I hope my apartment will find me soon. And what pitfalls have you run into while searching for an apartment? #useful
